25 Years of Peanuts: The Life and Work of Charles Schulz

25 Years of Peanuts: The Life and Work of Charles Schulz

Author:
Chip Kidd, Paige Braddock, Charlie Kochman
Add to my watchlist

For 50 years, Charles Schulz told the story of a meek, nervous Charlie Brown and his young circle of friends, whose philosophical musings and complex humor captivated millions of readers. Peanuts is among the most popular and influential comic strips in history, helping to cement the four-panel gag strip as a standard, and Schulz remains one of the world’s most influential cartoonists. Join author and designer Chip Kidd, cartoonist Paige Braddock, and Abrams editorial director Charlie Kochman as they share their insights on Schulz’s life, work, and never-before-seen drawings from the recently published Only What’s Necessary 70th Anniversary Edition: Charles M. Schulz and the Art of Peanuts.

Chip Kidd is an award-winning graphic designer, writer, and editor-at-large at Pantheon. His books on comics include Peanuts: The Art of Charles M. Schulz, Mythology: The DC Comics Art of Alex Ross, and Marvelocity: The Marvel Comics Art of Alex Ross. Charles M. Schulz believed that the key to cartooning was to take out the extraneous details and leave in only what’s necessary. For 50 years, he wrote and illustrated Peanuts, the single most popular and influential comic strip in the world. In Only What’s Necessary 70th Anniversary Edition: Charles M. Schulz and the Art of Peanuts (Abrams ComicArts) Kidd reproduces the best of the Peanuts newspaper strip, all shot from the original art by photographer Geoff Spear, and give us a look behind the curtain featuring rare and unpublished original art and developmental work—much of which has never been seen before.
