SUMMARY:Maya Abu Al-Hayyat on You Can Be the Last Leaf: Selected Poems
DESCRIPTION:Translated from the Arabic and introduced by Fady Joudah\, You Can Be the Last Leaf: Selected Poems draws on two decades of work to present the transcendent and timely US debut of Palestinian poet Maya Abu Al-Hayyat. Art. Garlic. Taxis. Sleepy soldiers at checkpoints. The smell of trash on a winter street\, before “our wild rosebush\, neglected / by the gate\, / blooms.” Lovers who don’t return\, the possibility that you yourself might not return. Making beds. Cleaning up vomit. Reading recipes. In You Can Be the Last Leaf\, these are the ordinary and profound – sometimes tragic\, sometimes dreamy\, sometimes almost frivolous – moments of life under Israeli occupation. Abu Al-Hayyat has created a richly textured portrait of Palestinian interiority – at once wry and romantic\, worried and tenacious\, and always singing itself. Moderated by author Lena Khalaf Tuffaha. \nThis is a ReadingEast program.

SUMMARY:Dan Wakefield on Kurt Vonnegut: The Making of a Writer: Young Adult Fiction
DESCRIPTION:This first and only YA biography of the great American novelist and humanist comes out on the 100th anniversary of his birth. Kurt Vonnegut\, author of Slaughterhouse Five\, Breakfast of Champions\, Cat’s Cradle\, and many other brilliant novels and short stories\, is one of our greatest American writers. Born in 1922\, Vonnegut’s life was full of great fortune and great despair: his family was wealthy\, but lost everything in the market crash of 1929; he was the youngest son in a loving family\, until his mother fell into a depression and committed suicide; he joined the army in WWII with great pride for our country\, but experienced instead a world of destruction and horror. How did he channel the highs and lows of his life into great writing? Dan Wakefield\, a friend and mentee of Vonnegut’s for decades\, distills the facts – including Vonnegut’s novels\, essays\, interviews\, letters\, and personal experiences – into a beautiful telling of the making of a writer. It is as though Wakefield is a friend walking through Vonnegut’s life alongside him\, a guide for readers to his extraordinary life. Here is a burgeoning artist’s life to inspire anyone who has read Vonnegut’s work or who themselves aspire to write. Moderated by Ellen Book\, branch manager with the Miami-Dade Public Library System. Grades 9-12 \nIn partnership with

SUMMARY:“Fact or Cap: Friendship\, Filters\, and the Self-Love Revolution”: Kacen Callender\, Crystal Maldonado\, Mayra Cuevas & Marie Marquardt
DESCRIPTION:In Lark & Kasim Start a Revolution by Kacen Callender\, when Lark’s former best friend Kasim accidentally posts a thread on Twitter declaring his love for a secret unrequited crush\, Lark’s social media stats and messy emotions explode\, setting them on a journey to speak the truth and discover how self-love can be a revolution. In Crystal Maldonado’s No Filter and Other Lies\, social media’s picture-perfect “Max Monroe” is actually quiet and sarcastic Kat Sanchez\, but when one of her posts goes viral and gets back to the girl she’s been stealing photos from\, she has to figure out how to escape the web of lies she’s woven without hurting the people she loves. In Does My Body Offend You?\, a collaboration by Mayra Cuevas and Marie Marquardt\, neither Malena Rosario nor Ruby McAllister expected to be the leaders of the school’s dress code rebellion. But the girls will have to face their own insecurities\, biases\, privileges\, and the ups and downs in their newfound friendship\, if they want to stand up for their ideals and – ultimately – for themselves. SUMMARY:Tom Mustill\, Priyanka Kumar & Sy Montgomery: A Conversation
DESCRIPTION:After surviving a humpback whale crashing into his kayak\, Tom Mustill turned to his experience as a naturalist and wildlife filmmaker to investigate human-whale interactions around the world. And in How to Speak Whale: A Voyage into the Future of Animal Communication\, he examines how artificial intelligence – originally designed to translate human languages – is being used to discover and decode patterns in animal communications. After moving from northern India to North America as a teenager\, author and filmmaker Priyanka Kumar became increasingly distanced from the natural world she once took for granted. She rediscovered her place in the landscape by watching birds\, a connection captured in a collection of essays in Conversations with Birds. In her stories\, birds “become a portal to a more vivid\, enchanted world.” In The Hawk’s Way: Encounters with Fierce Beauty\, Sy Montgomery reveals the wondrous world of these birds and what they can teach us about nature\, life\, and love. These are no pets but fierce predators\, deeply emotional\, quick to anger and frustration\, and capable of holding a grudge for years – but they are also intensely loyal.

SUMMARY:“Restlessness\, Reflection & Revolution”: Dana Levin\, Jana Prikryl & Jenny Xie
DESCRIPTION:Dana Levin’s Now Do You Know Where You Are investigates how great change calls the soul out of the old lyric\, working in a variety of forms\, calling on beloveds and ancestors\, great thinkers and religions – convened by her own spun-of-light wisdom and intellectual hospitality. In Midwood: Poems\, Jana Prikryl probes the notion of midlife\, when past and future blur in the equidistance\, balancing formal innovation with deeply personal reflections on love and sex and marriage and motherhood in new language for confronting our present moment. In polyphonic and formally restless sequences\, The Rupture Tense: Poems by Jenny Xie cracks open reverberant\, vexed experiences of diasporic homecoming intergenerational memory transfer\, state-enforced amnesia\, public secrecies\, and the psychic fallout of the Chinese Cultural Revolution. SUMMARY:2021 National Poetry Series Winner No’u Revilla
DESCRIPTION:The National Poetry Series was established in 1978 to recognize and promote excellence in contemporary poetry by ensuring the publication of five books of poetry annually through participating publishers. In addition\, the National Poetry Series has partnered with Miami Book Fair to award the Paz Prize in Poetry\, which ensures bilingual publication for a book of poems written in Spanish. This conversation features No’u Revilla on Ask the Brindled: Poems\, speaking with the judge who selected her manuscript\, Rick Barot\, The Galleons: Poems. In this debut collection\, Revilla crafts a lyric landscape brimming with shed skin\, water\, mo’o\, ma’i. She grips language like a fistful of wet guts and inks the page red – for desire\, for love\, for generations of blood spilled by colonizers. Wedding the history of the Kingdom of Hawai’i with contemporary experiences of queer love and queer grief\, Revilla writes toward sovereignty: linguistic\, erotic\, civic. Through the medium of formal dynamism and the material of ’Ōiwi culture and mythos\, this living decolonial text both condemns and creates. SUMMARY:“Disability Activism”: Ben Mattlin\, Akemi Nishida & Heidi Johnson-Wright
DESCRIPTION:In Disability Pride\, Dispatches From a Post-ADA World\, disabled journalist Ben Mattlin explores how disability attitudes\, activism\, and representation have evolved since the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Written without anger or pity\, it’s a revealing account of an often misunderstood movement and identity\, and an inclusive reexamination of society’s treatment of those it deems different. Akemi Nishida is the author of Just Care: Messy Entanglements of Disability\, Dependency\, and Desire\, in which she examines state care programs as well as grassroots interdependent care collectives and bed activism. Nishida is also appearing for Alice Wong\, author of Year of the Tiger: An Activist’s Life\, a collection of original essays\, published work\, conversations\, graphics\, photos\, and commissioned art by disabled and Asian American artists. These memoirs\, filled with biting wit\, joy\, and rage\, cover a broad range of issues\, from Wong’s love of food and pop culture to her unwavering commitment to dismantling systemic ableism. Moderating is attorney and writer Heidi Johnson-Wright\, whose practice often focuses on ADA compliance and advocacy.

SUMMARY:Celeste Mohammed With Tracey Baptiste: A Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Coconut trees. Carnival. Rum and Coke. To outsiders\, these idyllic images represent the so-called easy life in Caribbean nations such as Trinidad and Tobago. For those who live there the reality is very different\, and in Pleasantview: A Novel in Stories\, Trinidadian lawyer-turned-writer Celeste Mohammed reveals a society where poverty and patriarchy savagely rule – and love and revenge often go hand in hand. Writing in a combination of English and Trinidad Creole\, she sets the stories in a fictional town in Trinidad. There we meet a political candidate who sets out to slaughter endangered turtles for fun\, a rival candidate who beats his “outside woman” so severely that she loses their baby\, and a young boy with a gun. Moderating is Tracey Baptiste\,  New York Times bestselling author of Minecraft: The Crash.

SUMMARY:Phil Klay\, Elliot Ackerman & Ben Kesling: A Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Phil Klay’s Uncertain Ground: Citizenship in an Age of Endless\, Invisible War notes that relatively few Americans have had to do any real grappling with the endless\, invisible conflicts of the post-9/11 world; in fact\, increasingly few people are even aware they are still going on. But while American military actions abroad may be out of sight and out of mind\, the consequences are real. Elliot Ackerman had left the military 10 years before the Taliban began to close in on Kabul in August 2021 but was pulled back into the conflict by the humanitarian catastrophe at its conclusion. The Fifth Act: America’s End in Afghanistan documents the weight of 20 years of war bearing down on the week in which it ended. And in Bravo Company: An Afghanistan Deployment and Its Aftermath\, Ben Kesling\, a journalist and former Marine Corps officer who served in Iraq and Afghanistan\, tells the story of the war in Afghanistan and its consequences\, through the eyes of men who served in the 82nd Airborne Division. For some\, the war hasn’t ended\, even though they came home.
