SUMMARY:Richie Hell: “The Gumbo Limbo Experiment”
DESCRIPTION:When Richie Hell moved from Buenos Aires to Miami in 2015\, he saw how the gumbo limbo tree’s bark peeled off\, like a snake shedding its skin. He saw it as a positive sign: nature supporting this new beginning. His new full-length “The Gumbo Limbo Experiment” is an album that takes you to another place. Hell – an avid record collector\, DJ\, and musician since his teens – mixes and merges musical elements from across the space-time continuum: Afro and Balkan beats\, traveling blues\, future soul\, ’90s house\, Spaghetti Western sounds\, samples and field recordings\, mermaid calls\, and mantric chants. With homages to jungles\, cannabis\, inner strength\, and other life forces\, it makes sense that his music comes across as spiritual. \nHell also joins forces with a number of guest artists\, a reflection of his live shows\, which feature a full band and guest vocalists. Peruvian psychedelic cumbia legends Los Mirlos join him for “Amazonia\,” Argentine singer Martes provides her sultry\, soulful vocals on “Going Nomad” and “Revelations\,” and on the weed anthem “From The Earth” Atlanta rapper Black Bobby reminds us that cannabis is a gift from nature. The vibrant\, distinctive album art is by renowned visual artist Francisca Oyhanarte\, Hell’s wife. His sounds became songs\, her visions became images. From Miami\, for the universe\, “The Gumbo Limbo Experiment” offers a variety of beats to chill\, dance\, and groove to\, for fans of Quantic\, Khruangbin\, Polo & Pan\, El Búho\, Thievery Corporation\, and beyond. Hell makes world music that is otherworldly. \nRichie Hell transcends the terrestrial with his psychedelic take on intercontinental rhythms and uplifting mantric live shows. Born in Buenos Aires\, Argentina\, where he’s widely known as both a DJ and producer\, he arrived in Miami in 2015 and quickly became a favorite behind the decks at clubs around the Magic City. An avid record collector\, Hell absorbs influences from every reach of the musical spectrum\, adding his universal steady beat to produce a groovy\, shamanic experience. His original psych-infused electronic tunes are as satisfying on the dance floor as they are at a festival\, where his legendary live performances include hieroglyphic visuals by Francisca Oyhanarte\, 12-foot-tall inflatable cobras\, and guest vocalists. These are just a few of the tricks in his magic bag\, which have catapulted him to playing concerts and festivals all over the world. With three EPs released and a full-length LP out this summer\, Hell is ready to soundtrack today’s global dance party.

SUMMARY:In Conversation: On Luster
DESCRIPTION:Honoree\, 2020 National Book Foundation 5 Under 35 \nIn Luster\, we meet Edie\, a 23-year-old Black woman working in New York publishing who’s barely making rent each month\, trying to make sense of her life\, and finding herself tangled in a suburban white couple’s open marriage. As if navigating the constantly shifting landscapes of contemporary sexual mores and racial politics weren’t hard enough\, she’s abruptly left jobless and then invited to live in her lover’s home\, though not by him – by his wife. Called “sharp\, strange\, propellant – and a whole lot of fun\,” by Kirkus\, Luster is Raven Leilani’s debut. She’s speaking with Susan Choi\, a 2019 National Book Award winner in fiction for Trust Exercise. \n

SUMMARY:In Conversation: On Leave the World Behind
DESCRIPTION:2020 National Book Award Finalist \nKeenly attuned to the complexities of parenthood\, race\, and class\, the critically acclaimed Leave the World Behind tells the story of two families\, strangers forced together over a long weekend gone terribly wrong. Shielding themselves in a charmingly secluded house that’s suddenly become a dubious refuge from whatever monstrous thing may be out there\, the inhabitants trapped inside Alam’s potentially apocalyptic world inexorably careen toward what the New York Times calls an “undeniably haunting” end. He is speaking with writer Bryan Washington\, author of the recently released novel Memorial\, an unconventional rom-com\, of which Entertainment Weekly said: “Wryly funny\, gently devastating … Washington’s hand is effortless – smooth dialogue\, a love for good food\, and his vibrant\, sprawling\, gradually gentrifying hometown – in inviting you into a nuanced love story that sticks to you like the Texas heat.”

SUMMARY:Three Documentaries on Jewish South Beach
DESCRIPTION:Aaron Davidson’s documentary films on Jewish themes have all been created in South Florida\, but transcend their local flavor and are at once familiar and nostalgic. With the passage of time his earliest films have become both historical records and time capsules\, documenting places that have since closed or become unrecognizable and now live on in film only. A hallmark of Davidson’s work is his periodic updates of his films\, often with poignant\, ironic\, or unexpected results. Films made innocently more than a decade ago in an earlier context take on new and added meaning with contemporary footage. Driven by that experience\, the three films being screened for the Miami Book Fair now amazingly span 12 years\, and they have all been updated in anticipation of their premiere screening at the Fair.

SUMMARY:In Conversation: On Golden State
DESCRIPTION:This dystopian noir thriller – the latest novel from New York Times bestselling author Ben H. Winters – is set in the Golden State\, a sovereign nation established where California once stood\, and a place where like-minded Americans retreated after the erosion of truth and the spread of lies made public life and governance impossible outside its borders. But in a society that values truth above all else\, monitoring\, verifying\, and enforcing it can lead to far greater crimes when placed in the wrong hands. SUMMARY:In Conversation: On Sorry for Your Trouble & Snow
DESCRIPTION:In Sorry for Your Trouble\, a collection of short stories\, Pulitzer Prize winner Richard Ford offers a moving meditation on memory\, love\, and loss. From a 16-year-old fatherless boy in “Displaced” to the fiftysomething widower suddenly navigating life alone and untethered in “The Run of Yourself\,” Ford’s protagonists are all mourning\, both the people who are no longer there and the lives they no longer have – or perhaps never did. Joining him is iconic Irish novelist John Banville discussing his latest work\, Snow\, a dark thriller that kicks off with the murder – and castration – of a Catholic priest in a country manor.

SUMMARY:Storytime: The Worst Read-Aloud Books Ever
DESCRIPTION:Grades PreK – 3 \nIntroduced by Cierra Bragan\, Miami Mom Collective. \nLet’s get real – the English language is bizarre. A might be for apple\, but it’s also for aisle and aeons. Why does the word “gnat” start with a G but the word “knot” doesn’t start with an N? It doesn’t always make sense in Raj Haldar’s P is for Pterodactyl: The Worst Alphabet Book Ever\, but don’t let these rule-breaking silent letters defeat you! \nYou can’t believe everything you hear. A single word can have many different meanings. And sometimes two words that sound alike can be spelled completely differently. In No Reading Allowed: The Worst Read-Aloud Book Ever\, Haldar takes a fresh look at the English language for children and their parents to laugh together. Ptolemy the pterodactyl is back to show us all how absurd and fun language can be when homophones\, homonyms\, and tricky punctuation are at play. \n  \nSponsored by:\n \nThe Children’s Trust Family Resource Guide | Romero Britto Coloring Book \nBook Club Flyer – English | Book Club Flyer – Spanish | Book Club Flyer – Creole

SUMMARY:2019 National Poetry Series Winners
DESCRIPTION:Special introduction by Daniel Halpern\, founder of HarperCollins imprint Ecco and the National Poetry Series. \nThe National Poetry Series was established in 1978 to recognize and promote excellence in contemporary poetry by ensuring the publication of five books of poetry annually through participating publishers. In addition\, the National Poetry Series has partnered with Miami Book Fair to award the Paz Prize in Poetry\, which ensures bilingual publication for a book of poems written in Spanish. This conversation features Michael Torres on An Incomplete List of Names: Poems\, in conversation with the judge who selected his manuscript\, Raquel Salas Rivera\, Lo terciario/The Tertiary. \nWho do we belong to? This is the question Torres ponders as he explores the roles that names\, hometown\, language\, and others’ perceptions each play on our understanding of ourselves in An Incomplete List of Names: Poems. More than a boyhood ballad or a coming-of-age story\, this collection illuminates the artist’s struggle to make sense of the disparate identities others have forced upon him. \nSponsored by:

SUMMARY:A U.S. Poet Laureate in Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Joy Harjo on When the Light of the World was Subdued\, Our Songs Came Through: A Norton Anthology of Native Nations Poetry is a landmark collection celebrating the Indigenous peoples of North America – the first poets of this country – whose literary traditions stretch back centuries. Opening with a blessing from Pulitzer Prize-winner N. Scott Momaday\, the book contains powerful introductions from contributing editors who represent the five geographically organized sections. Each begins with a poem from traditional oral literatures and closes with emerging poets\, ranging from Eleazar\, a 17th-century Native student at Harvard\, to Jake Skeets\, a young Diné poet born in 1991\, and including renowned writers such as Luci Tapahonso\, Natalie Diaz\, Layli Long Soldier\, and Ray Young Bear. When the Light of the World Was Subdued\, Our Songs Came Through offers the extraordinary sweep of Native literature\, without which no study of American poetry is complete. \nModerated by Campbell McGrath\, Nouns & Verbs: New and Selected Poems. \nSponsored by
