SUMMARY:“Rivalries & Responsibilities”: B. B. Alston & Julie C. Dao
DESCRIPTION:B. B. Alston returns to his Supernatural Investigations trilogy with Amari and the Great Game. Between the fearsome new Head Minister’s strict anti-magician agenda\, fierce Junior Agent rivalries\, and her brother Quinton’s curse steadily worsening\, Amari’s plate is full. So when the secretive League of Magicians offers her a chance to become its new leader\, she declines. But her refusal allows someone else to step forward\, a magician with dangerous plans. This challenge sparks the start of the Great Game\, a competition to decide who will become the Night Brothers’ successor and determine the future of magiciankind. In Julie C. Dao’s Team Chu and the Battle for Blackwood Arena\, Clip and Sadie Chu couldn’t be more different. Clip wants to become his school’s first seventh-grade soccer captain\, while brainy star student Sadie is determined to prove that she can do anything her boastful brother can. They have just one thing in common: they love laser tag. When the Blackwood Gaming Arena comes to town\, bringing virtual reality headsets and state-of-the-art courses\, they couldn’t be more excited – or competitive. But then a mysterious figure appears\, forcing the Chus and their friends to save themselves from a sinister force lurking inside the simulation. Moderated by Kimberly White\, youth services coordinator for Broward County Library. Grades 3-8 \nIn partnership with

DESCRIPTION:The National Poetry Series was established in 1978 to recognize and promote excellence in contemporary poetry by ensuring the publication of five books of poetry annually through participating publishers. In addition\, the National Poetry Series has partnered with Miami Book Fair to award the Paz Prize in Poetry\, which ensures bilingual publication for a book of poems written in Spanish. This conversation features Kien Lam on Extinction Theory: Poems\, speaking with the judge who selected his manuscript\, Kyle Dargan\, Anagnorisis: Poems. Extinction Theory is a collection of pseudoscience poems that try to provide rationales for some of life’s most salient mysteries. Where is God? What does it mean to belong? Who killed the dinosaurs? Lam creates new worlds with new rules to better answer these perennial questions. His poetry is that of discovery\, of looking at the world as if for the first time. He exposes the transitory and transcendent nature of things and how we find meaning. SUMMARY:Desiree Cooper on Nothing Special: Picture Book
DESCRIPTION:Six-year-old Jax can’t wait to leave Detroit and spend a week with his grandparents in coastal Virginia\, where he’s sure he’ll be spoiled with the kinds of special things he enjoys at home: toys\, movies\, and hamburgers. As he dreams of the adventures he’ll have\, his PopPop has other ideas. He fills their days with timeless summer fun – crabbing\, shucking corn\, and counting fireflies. Illustrated entirely of repurposed textiles\, Nothing Special by Desiree Cooper celebrates the enduring connection between the generations who stayed in the South and the millions of emigrants for whom it will always be home. Between 1910 and 1970\, more than 6 million African Americans left the Jim Crow South\, but they never forgot the culture\, the land\, and the family they left behind. In the decades since\, it has become a summer ritual for many Black families to reverse the journey and return South for a visit to their homeplaces. Introduction by the Miami Mom Collective. SUMMARY:2021 National Poetry Series Winner Su Cho
This conversation features Su Cho on The Symmetry of Fish\, speaking with the judge who selected her manuscript\, Paige Lewis\, Space Struck. Language and lore are at the core of The Symmetry of Fish\, a moving debut about coming-of-age in the middle of nowhere. With striking and tender insight\, it seeks to give voice to those who have been denied their stories\, and examines the way phrases and narratives are passed down through immigrant families – not diluted over time\, but distilled into potency over generations. In this way\, a family’s language is not lost but continuously remade\, hitched to new associations\, and capable of blooming anew\, with the power to cut across space and time to unearth buried memories. SUMMARY:U.S. Poet Laureate Ada Limón & Robert Casper: A Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Ada Limón returns to the Miami Book Fair to celebrate her new appointment as the 24th U.S. Poet Laureate and The Hurting Kind\, an astonishing collection about interconnectedness between the human and nonhuman\, ancestors and ourselves. What does it mean to be the hurting kind? To be sensitive not only to the world’s pain and joys\, but to the meanings that bend in the scrim between the natural world and the human world? To divine the relationships between us all? To perceive ourselves in other beings – and to know that those beings are resolutely their own\, that they “do not / care to be seen as symbols”? With Limón’s remarkable ability to trace thought\, The Hurting Kind explores those questions – incorporating others’ stories and ways of knowing\, making surprising turns\, and always reaching a place of startling insight. Presented in partnership with the Library of Congress and O\, Miami; moderated by Robert Casper\, head of Poetry and Literature at the Library of Congress. \nPresented in partnership with \nSponsored by  \n\nFunding for this program was provided through a grant from Florida Humanities with funds from the National Endowment for the Humanities. SUMMARY:2022 Big Read Keynote Address: Thi Bui\, author of The Best We Could Do in conversation with Pulitzer Prize-winning author\, Viet Thanh Nguyen
DESCRIPTION:RSVP here for keynote \n“I began to record our family history…thinking that if I bridged the gap between the past and the present\, I could fill the void between my parents and me.”\n—Thi Bui in The Best We Could Do \nJoin us for a virtual talk and Q&A with this year’s Big Read featured author\, Thi Bui as she discusses this award-winning graphic memoir.  \nBefore she began to work on The Best We Could Do in 2005\, Thi Bui had never drawn a comic in her life. Twelve years later\, the debut graphic memoir would be released to widespread acclaim from critics and literary heavyweights alike. An American Book Award winner\, a National Book Critics Circle finalist in autobiography\, and an Eisner Award finalist in reality-based comics\, Bui’s memoir traces her family’s daring escape after the fall of South Vietnam in the 1970s and their effort to build new lives for themselves in America. SUMMARY:THE TRAYVON GENERATION: A VIRTUAL EVENING WITH ELIZABETH ALEXANDER
DESCRIPTION:Books & Books\, Miami Book Fair and Independent Bookstores across the U.S. present… A Virtual Evening with ELIZABETH ALEXANDER on The Trayvon Generation \n*Named one of TIME magazine’s Most Anticipated Titles of 2022* \nFrom a Pulitzer Prize finalist and New York Times bestselling author and poet comes a galvanizing meditation on the power of art and culture to illuminate America’s unresolved problem with race. \nIn the midst of civil unrest in the summer of 2020 and following the murders of George Floyd\, Breonna Taylor\, and Ahmaud Arbery\, Elizabeth Alexander—one of the great literary voices of our time—turned a mother’s eye to her sons’ and students’ generation and wrote a celebrated and moving reflection on the challenges facing young Black America. Originally published in the New Yorker\, the essay incisively and lovingly observed the experiences\, attitudes\, and cultural expressions of what she referred to as the Trayvon Generation\, who even as children could not be shielded from the brutality that has affected the lives of so many Black people. \nThe Trayvon Generation expands the viral essay that spoke so resonantly to the persistence of race as an ongoing issue at the center of the American experience. Alexander looks both to our past and our future with profound insight\, brilliant analysis\, and mighty heart\, interweaving her voice with groundbreaking works of art by some of our most extraordinary artists. At this crucial time in American history when we reckon with who we are as a nation and how we move forward\, Alexander’s lyrical prose gives us perspective informed by historical understanding\, her lifelong devotion to education\, and an intimate grasp of the visioning power of art. \nThis breathtaking book is essential reading and an expression of both the tragedies and hopes for the young people of this era that is sure to be embraced by those who are leading the movement for change and anyone rising to meet the moment. \n

SUMMARY:READ DANGEROUSLY: A VIRTUAL EVENING WITH AZAR NAFISI & JACKI LYDEN
DESCRIPTION:Books & Books\, Miami Book Fair and Independent Bookstores across the U.S. present… A Virtual Evening with AZAR NAFISI IN CONVERSATION WITH JACKI LYDEN on Read Dangerously: The Subversive Power of Literature in Troubled Times \nThe New York Times bestselling author of Reading Lolita in Tehran returns with a guide to the power of literature in turbulent times\, arming readers with a resistance reading list\, ranging from James Baldwin to Zora Neale Hurston to Margaret Atwood. \n“[A] stunning look at the power of reading. … Provokes and inspires at every turn.” —Publishers Weekly (starred review) \nWhat is the role of literature in an era when one political party wages continual war on writers and the press? What is the connection between political strife in our daily lives\, and the way we meet our enemies on the page in fiction? How can literature\, through its free exchange\, affect politics? \nIn this galvanizing guide to literature as resistance\, Nafisi seeks to answer these questions. Drawing on her experiences as a woman and voracious reader living in the Islamic Republic of Iran\, her life as an immigrant in the United States\, and her role as literature professor in both countries\, she crafts an argument for why\, in a genuine democracy\, we must engage with the enemy\, and how literature can be a vehicle for doing so. \nStructured as a series of letters to her father\, who taught her as a child about how literature can rescue us in times of trauma\, Nafisi explores the most probing questions of our time through the works of Toni Morrison\, Salman Rushdie\, James Baldwin\, Margaret Atwood\, and more.
