SUMMARY:Vanderbilt: A Virtual Evening with Anderson Cooper
DESCRIPTION:Books & Books joins bookstores across the country for this exclusive conversation and book launch with Anderson Cooper! \nJoin CNN anchor and New York Times bestselling author Anderson Cooper as he chronicles the rise and fall of a legendary American dynasty—his mother’s family\, the Vanderbilts. \n\nTickets + a copy of Vanderbilt: The Rise and Fall of an American Dynasty are available for $30 + tax/fee + shipping. Once you make your purchase\, we will send you a unique link and to access the event on zoom webinar. See below for detailed information on tickets. \n\nFew names are as synonymous with wealth and glamour as “Vanderbilt.”When Cornelius Vanderbilt\, the teenaged son of a ferryman who worked in New York Harbor\, decided to go into business on his own\, few would have believed that within six decades he would come to epitomize American business\, magnate of a shipping and railroad empire that made him the richest man in the country. In the wake of his death in 1877\, Cornelius’s heirs bitterly fought over his estate\, sowing familial discord that would last for decades. For the generations of Vanderbilts who followed\, fortunes were lost and made and lost again. In this tide of success and failure\, a particularly American excess displayed itself. By 2019\, when the last Vanderbilt left the Breakers— the estate in Newport\, Rhode Island\, his son and namesake Cornelius Vanderbilt II built—the family would most likely have been unrecognizable to the Commodore.Now\, the Commodore’s great-great-great-grandson\, Anderson Cooper\, tells the story of his legendary family and their remarkable influence. Working with historian and novelist Katherine Howe\, Cooper breathes life into the ancestors who built the family’s empire\, doubled the Commodore’s wealth\, hosted lavish galas\, and became synonymous with American capitalism and high society. Moving from Staten Island to the drawing rooms of Fifth Avenue\, the ornate cottages of Newport to Europe\, Cooper and Howe wryly recount the family’s triumphs and tragedies and reflect on the social mores they observed\, flouted\, and shaped.Drawing on never-before-seen documents and told from a unique insider’s viewpoint\, this is a rollicking\, quintessentially American history as remarkable as the family it so vividly captures. \n

SUMMARY:Santiago Roncagliolo presenta Y líbranos del mal

McLaughlin\, autor de El sancocho sorpresa del buen desconocido/The Good Stranger’s Sancocho Surprise.

SUMMARY:Poetry as Healing Tool with Dr. Norman Rosenthal\, Psychiatrist
DESCRIPTION:Norman Rosenthal M.D. presents us with poetry to heal\, inspire and enjoy. In conversation with Bob Roth\, CEO of The David Lynch Foundation. \nClick HERE to Purchase Book \nBooks & Books and Miami Book Fair in collaboration with The David Lynch Foundation present “A Virtual Evening with Norman E. Rosenthal M.D.” discussing Poetry Rx: How 50 Inspiring Poems Can Heal and Bring Joy To Your Life (G & D Media\, $30). In this book\, you will find insights into love\, sorrow\, ecstasy and everything in between: Love in the moment or for a lifetime; love that is fulfilling or addictive; when to break up and how to survive when someone breaks up with you. \nThis event is free and open to the public. Ticket/book bundles are optional and available for $30 (+ tax & fee) and include a copy of Poetry RX: How 50 Inspiring Poems Can Heal and Bring Joy to Your Life shipped straight to your door. Once you have registered on Eventbrite\, you will receive an email from us approximately 24 hours before the event starts with a link for you to stream. See below for detailed information on tickets. \n \nNever before have we had a tour by such a tour guide through great poetry which can\, heal\, inspire and bring joy to our lives. \n“I used to believe that poetry did not “speak” to me\, but I now see how wrong I was. I lived for 44 years with a husband\, a lyricist\, whose beautifully crafted\, heartfelt lyrics touched my every fiber and continue to uplift and inspire me a decade after his death. The special beauty of Dr. Rosenthal’s book for me is his discussion of what each poem is saying\, what the poet was likely feeling and often how the poems helped him personally\, as when he left his birth family in South Africa for a rewarding career in the United States.” – Jane Brody\, Author & New York Times Columnist \nPoetry Rx presents 50 great poems as seen through the eyes of a renowned psychiatrist and New York Times bestseller. \nSeparate sections deal with responses to the natural world\, and the varieties of human experience (such as hope\, reconciliation\, leaving home\, faith\, self-actualization\, trauma\, anger\, and the thrill of discovery). Other sections involve finding your way in the world and the search for meaning\, as well as the final stages of life. \nIn describing this multitude of human experiences\, using vignettes from his work and life\, Rosenthal serves as a comforting guide to these poetic works of genius. Through his writing\, the workings of the mind\, as depicted by these gifted writers speak to us as intimately as our closest friends. \nRosenthal also delves into the science of mind and brain. Who would have thought\, for example\, that listening to poetry can cause people to have goosebumps by activating the reward centers of the brain? Yet research shows that to be true. \nAnd who were these fascinating poets? In a short biosketch that accompanies each poem\, Rosenthal draws connections between the poets and their poems that help us understand the enigmatic minds that gave birth to these masterworks. Altogether\, a fulfilling and intriguing must-read for anyone interested in poetry\, the mind\, self-help and genius. \n \n  \n

Once you make your purchase\, we will send you a private link to access the event. See below for detailed information on tickets. \nClick HERE to Purchase Book \nNamed a best book of 2020 by The New York Times\, The Washington Post\, TIME\, The Guardian\, and many more \n“If you cannot speak truth at a beheading\, when can you speak it?”\nEngland\, May 1536. Anne Boleyn is dead\, decapitated in the space of a heartbeat by a hired French executioner. As her remains are bundled into oblivion\, Thomas Cromwell breakfasts with the victors. The blacksmith’s son from Putney emerges from the spring’s bloodbath to continue his climb to power and wealth\, while his formidable master\, Henry VIII\, settles to short-lived happiness with his third queen before Jane dies giving birth to the male heir he most craves. \nCromwell is a man with only his wits to rely on; he has no great family to back him\, no private army. Despite rebellion at home\, traitors plotting abroad and the threat of invasion testing Henry’s regime to the breaking point\, Cromwell’s robust imagination sees a new country in the mirror of the future. But can a nation\, or a person\, shed the past like a skin? Do the dead continually unbury themselves? What will you do\, the Spanish ambassador asks Cromwell\, when the king turns on you\, as sooner or later he turns on everyone close to him? \nWith The Mirror & the Light\, Hilary Mantel brings to a triumphant close the trilogy she began with Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies. She traces the final years of Thomas Cromwell\, the boy from nowhere who climbs to the heights of power\, offering a defining portrait of predator and prey\, of a ferocious contest between present and past\, between royal will and a common man’s vision: of a modern nation making itself through conflict\, passion\, and courage. \nHilary Mantel\, a two-time winner of the Man Booker Prize\, is the author of the bestselling Wolf Hall Trilogy. The trilogy’s novels—Wolf Hall\, Bring Up the Bodies\, and The Mirror & the Light—have been translated into thirty-seven languages\, and their sales have reached over six million copies worldwide. She is the author of sixteen books\, including A Place of Greater Safety\, the memoir Giving Up the Ghost\, and the short-story collection The Assassination of Margaret Thatcher. \nModerated by: Nancy Goldstone \nClick HERE to Purchase Book \nAdmission + a copy of The Mirror & the Light are available for $18 + tax/fee and shipped straight to your door. SUMMARY:An Evening with NBA Champions Chris Bosh & Dwyane Wade discussing Letters to a Young Athlete
DESCRIPTION:To receive access code to watch this program on MiamiBookFairOnline.com\, please enter YOUNGATHLETE when you purchase the book on BooksandBooks.com. You will receive an email confirmation with the video access code. \nClick HERE to Purchase Book \nWe are thrilled to announce that Books & Books and Miami Book Fair will join forces to present eleven-time All-Star\, two-time NBA champion\, Olympic gold medalist\, and the league’s Global Ambassador\, Chris Bosh for the launch of LETTERS TO A YOUNG ATHLETE! \n  \nChris Bosh\, had his playing days cut short at their prime by a freak medical condition. His extraordinary career ended not at a time of his choosing but “in a doctor’s office in the middle of the afternoon.” Forced to reckon with how to find meaning to carry forward\, he found himself looking back over his path\, from a teenager in Dallas who balanced basketball with the high school robotics club to the pinnacle of the NBA and beyond. \nReflecting on all he learned from a long list of basketball legends\, from LeBron and Kobe to Pat Riley and Coach K\, he saw that his important lessons weren’t about basketball so much as the inner game of success—right attitude\, right commitment\, right flow within a team. Now he shares that journey\, giving us a fascinating view from the inside of what greatness feels like and what it takes\, formulated as a series of letters to younger people coming up and to all wisdom seekers. A timeless gift for anyone in pursuit of excellence\, Letters to a Young Athlete offers a proven path for taming your inner voice and making it your ally\, through the challenges of failure and the challenges of success alike. \n\nPresented in partnership with Books & Books.

SUMMARY:Creole\, Creolish: Regionalisms in Haitian Creole (Pale moun nan Nò ak pale moun nan Lwès ak Sid)
DESCRIPTION:Click HERE to View Event \nCreole\, Creolish: Regionalisms in Haitian Creole (Pale moun nan Nò ak pale moun nan Lwès ak Sid) with Prof. Jean-Robert Placide and Prof. Yvon Lamour. Moderated by Ms. Sherley Louis\, Ms.Ed. Includes special segments with artist Morel Doucet and Haitian-American lifestyle\, tourism\, culture\, society and entertainment blog L’Union Suite. \nEvery language has regional dialects. Haitian Creole is also subject to these variations.  In Northern Creole\, there are words\, phrases\, and pronunciations that are different from other regions of Haiti. Haitians in the Southern and Western parts of the country do not have these words in their vocabulary. Sometimes\, even the same words have different meanings depending on where they are spoken. \nIn this panel\, we examine this phenomenon and ask: Do these regional variations stem from the linguistic separation that took place after Jean-Jacques Dessalines’s death\, when two education systems emerged in Haiti\, one in French in the South and the West with Pétion; the other one in English in the North/North-West with Henri Christophe? \nNan tout lang gen dyalèk rejyonal. Kreyòl ayisyen an gen menm varyasyon sa a ladan. Nan kreyòl nò peyi a\, gen mo\, ekspresyon ak pwononsyayon ki pa menm ak nan lòt rejyon peyi Dayiti. Ayisyen nan pati Sid ak nan pati Lwès peyi an pa genyen mo sa yo nan vokabilè yo. Pafwa menm\, menm mo yo pa gen menm siyifikasyon tout kote. \nNan panèl sa a\, n ap egzaminen fenomèn sa a epi mande:  Èske varyasyon rejyonal sa a soti nan separasyon lengwistik la apre lanmò Jan Jak Desalin\, lè te gen de sistèm edikasyon ki te parèt an Ayiti\, youn an Franse nan Sid ak Lwès ak Petion; lòt la nan lang Angle nan pati Nò/Nòdwès la ak Anri Kristòf?  \nClick HERE to View Event \n  \n \nThe Little Haiti Book Festival is part of Miami Book Fair’s ReadCaribbean programs\, sponsored in part by the Green Family Foundation\, Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and Florida Division of Cultural Affairs.

SUMMARY:Haitian Carnival: Art\, Culture\, Religion (Kanaval nan Peyi Dayiti)
DESCRIPTION:Click HERE to View Event \nHaitian Carnival: Art\, Culture\, Religion (Kanaval nan Peyi Dayiti) with award-winning writer Edwidge Danticat and Reverend  Nathanael Saint-Pierre. Moderated by Lochard Noel\, PhD. Includes special segments with artist Stephen Arboite and Haitian radio personality Severe Livincoeurs from WSRF. \nCarnival\, called Madigra (Mardi-Gras) in Haiti\, is a cultural event that is not to be missed. The population of Haiti\, from the very poor to the very wealthy\, dresses up in their brightest clothes and parades to the rhythms of Konpa music. Madigra has a long history. This celebration originated in Europe\, and was brought to the New World\, where it blended with Native-American traditions during colonization. Madigra in Haiti is a national celebration. Every town has its own version of Madigra\, from decorated floats rolling past with beautiful queens waving to the crowds\, to live bands\, marching musical groups\, to colorful traditional costumes… Everyone sings\, dances\, and unwinds. But beyond the fun\, there is a serious component to Madigra. It is also a time for the people to relay their demands and criticism with short plays and lyrics directed at political figures. \nIn this panel discussion\, we will talk about the fun parts of Madigra\, but also look at some of the more serious aspects of the celebration. Chak vil gen estil madigra pa li\, cha dekore k ap pase avèk bèl rèn k ap voye men bay foul la\, djaz k ap jwe\, bann apye\, kostim tradisyonèl tout koulè… Tout moun ap chante\, danse\, defoule konsyans yo.  Anplis de plezi an\, gen yon eleman serye nan Madigra tou. Se epòk tou kote pèp la fè pase revandikasyon ak kritik li ak ti pyès teyat ak chante pwent pou atake ofisyèl politik yo. \nNan panèl diskisyon sa a\, nou pral pale de pati detant la nan Madigra\, men n ap gade tou kèk nan aspè pi serye selebrasyon an. \nClick HERE to View Event\n \nThe Little Haiti Book Festival is part of Miami Book Fair’s ReadCaribbean programs\, sponsored in part by the Green Family Foundation\, Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and Florida Division of Cultural Affairs.

SUMMARY:Antitrust: A Virtual Evening with Amy Klobuchar & Alberto Ibargüen
DESCRIPTION:Click HERE to Purchase Tickets \nAn important\, urgently needed book from the much-admired senior senator from Minnesota\, and former candidate for president of the United States—a fascinating exploration of antitrust in America and the way forward to protect all Americans from the dangers of curtailed competition\, and from vast information gathering\, through monopolies. \nFrom Standard Oil\, and the Sherman Anti-Trust Act\, to the Progressive Era’s trust-busters\, Amy Klobuchar\, in this large\, compelling history\, writes of the fight against monopolies in America. \nShe writes of the breakup of Ma Bell\, the pricing monopoly of Big Pharma\, and the future of the giant tech companies (Facebook\, Amazon\, Google). \nShe begins with the Gilded Age (1870s-1900)\, when builders of fortunes and rapacious robber barons such as J. P. Morgan\, John Rockefeller\, and Cornelius Vanderbilt were reaping vast fortunes as industrialization swept across the American landscape\, with the rich getting vastly richer and the poor\, poorer. She discusses President Theodore Roosevelt\, who\, during the Progressive Era (1890s-1920)\, “busted” the trusts (breaking up monopolies); the Clayton Act of 1914; the Federal Trade Commission Act of 1914; and the Celler-Kefauver Act of 1950 (it strengthened the Clayton Act). She explores today’s Big Pharma and its price-gouging; and tech\, television\, content\, and agriculture communities and how a marketplace with few players\, or one in which one company dominates distribution\, can hurt consumer prices and stifle innovation. \nAs the ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Antitrust\, Competition Policy\, and Consumer Rights\, Klobuchar is at work on\, among others\, issues raised by giant tech companies\, such as Facebook\, Google (it reportedly controls 90 percent of the search engine market)\, and Amazon\, and puts forth her plans\, ideas\, and legislative proposals designed to strengthen the antitrust laws and antitrust enforcement. \n\nClick HERE to Purchase Tickets \nPresented in partnership with

NOTE: The LIVE CHAT/Q&A function is ONLY AVAILABLE DURING LIVE EVENTS\n\nSign Up / Login Here\n  \n\nTruth and lies are two sides of the same coin. But who’s flipping it? \nA thought-provoking and brilliantly entertaining work of nonfiction from one of the world’s leading deceivers\, the creator and star of the astonishing theater show and forthcoming film In & Of Itself. \nDerek DelGaudio believed he was a decent\, honest man. But when irrefutable evidence to the contrary is found in an old journal\, his memories are reawakened and Derek is forced to confront–and try to understand–his role in a significant act of deception from his past. \nUsing his youthful notebook entries as a road map\, Derek embarks on a soulful\, often funny\, sometimes dark journey\, retracing the path that led him to a world populated by charlatans\, card cheats\, and con artists. As stories are peeled away and artifices are revealed\, Derek examines the mystery behind his father’s vanishing act\, the secret he inherited from his mother\, the obsession he developed with sleight-of-hand that shaped his future\, and the affinity he felt for the professional swindlers who taught him how to deceive others. And once he finds himself working as a crooked dealer in a big-money Hollywood card game\, Derek begins to question his own sense of morality\, and discovers that even a master of deception can find himself trapped inside an illusion. \nA M O R A L M A N is a wildly engaging exploration of the fictions we live as truths. It is ultimately a book about the lies we tell ourselves and the realities we manufacture in others. \n  \n\nPresented in partnership with Books & Books.
