SUMMARY:In Conversation: On Cuban Memory Wars: Retrospective Politics in Revolution and Exile
DESCRIPTION:In Cuban Memory Wars: Retrospective Politics in Revolution and Exile\, Michael J. Bustamante\, Ph.D.\, associate professor and the Emilio Bacardí Moreau Chair in Cuban and Cuban-American Studies at the University of Miami\, argues that Cubans’ battles over the past helped shape the course of Cuban history itself. Beyond the polarized vision seemingly set in stone today – the revolution as deliverance from inequality versus paradise lost – there might be a more inclusive national narrative. Moderated by John Gutierrez\, assistant professor at John Jay College\, City University of New York. \nSponsored by

SUMMARY:Gray Areas: Human Relations and Critical Thinking in the Era of Social Media (Refleksyon sou enfliyans medya sosyal)
DESCRIPTION:Click HERE to View Event \nGray Areas: Human Relations and Critical Thinking in the Era of Social Media (Refleksyon sou enfliyans medya sosyal) with researcher Herve Fanini-Lemoine and Haitian radio and TV personality Carel Pedre. Moderated by Myrtha Wroy\, M.S. Includes special segments with artist Vanessa Charlot and Haitian radio personality Elizabeth Guerin from Island TV. \nThere is no doubt that social media has changed the world. Information that used to take days or weeks to spread is now instantly available around the globe\, and access to this information is just a mouse click away. Whether it is traditional media\, or a personal post gone viral\, information is now spreading faster than it ever has\, and it is not always reliable information. \nIn this panel\, we examine the toll of social media on interpersonal relationships\, and the influence of Facebook\, Twitter\, Instagram\, Whatsapp\, etc.\, at the social\, political\, and economic level. \nPa gen dout\, medya sosyal chanje lemond. \nNan panèl sa a\, n ap egzaminen konsekans medya sosyal sou relasyon ant moun\, ak enfliyans Facebook\, Twitter\, Instagram\, Whatsapp\, elatriye\, nan nivo sosyal\, politik\, ak ekonomik. \nClick HERE to View Event\n \nThe Little Haiti Book Festival is part of Miami Book Fair’s ReadCaribbean programs\, sponsored in part by the Green Family Foundation\, Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and Florida Division of Cultural Affairs.

SUMMARY:Creole\, Creolish: Regionalisms in Haitian Creole (Pale moun nan Nò ak pale moun nan Lwès ak Sid)
DESCRIPTION:Click HERE to View Event \nCreole\, Creolish: Regionalisms in Haitian Creole (Pale moun nan Nò ak pale moun nan Lwès ak Sid) with Prof. Jean-Robert Placide and Prof. Yvon Lamour. Moderated by Ms. Sherley Louis\, Ms.Ed. Includes special segments with artist Morel Doucet and Haitian-American lifestyle\, tourism\, culture\, society and entertainment blog L’Union Suite. \nEvery language has regional dialects. Haitian Creole is also subject to these variations.  In Northern Creole\, there are words\, phrases\, and pronunciations that are different from other regions of Haiti. Haitians in the Southern and Western parts of the country do not have these words in their vocabulary. Sometimes\, even the same words have different meanings depending on where they are spoken. \nIn this panel\, we examine this phenomenon and ask: Do these regional variations stem from the linguistic separation that took place after Jean-Jacques Dessalines’s death\, when two education systems emerged in Haiti\, one in French in the South and the West with Pétion; the other one in English in the North/North-West with Henri Christophe? \nNan tout lang gen dyalèk rejyonal. Kreyòl ayisyen an gen menm varyasyon sa a ladan. Nan kreyòl nò peyi a\, gen mo\, ekspresyon ak pwononsyayon ki pa menm ak nan lòt rejyon peyi Dayiti. Ayisyen nan pati Sid ak nan pati Lwès peyi an pa genyen mo sa yo nan vokabilè yo. Pafwa menm\, menm mo yo pa gen menm siyifikasyon tout kote. \nNan panèl sa a\, n ap egzaminen fenomèn sa a epi mande:  Èske varyasyon rejyonal sa a soti nan separasyon lengwistik la apre lanmò Jan Jak Desalin\, lè te gen de sistèm edikasyon ki te parèt an Ayiti\, youn an Franse nan Sid ak Lwès ak Petion; lòt la nan lang Angle nan pati Nò/Nòdwès la ak Anri Kristòf?  \nClick HERE to View Event \n  \n \nThe Little Haiti Book Festival is part of Miami Book Fair’s ReadCaribbean programs\, sponsored in part by the Green Family Foundation\, Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and Florida Division of Cultural Affairs.

SUMMARY:Haitian Carnival: Art\, Culture\, Religion (Kanaval nan Peyi Dayiti)
DESCRIPTION:Click HERE to View Event \nHaitian Carnival: Art\, Culture\, Religion (Kanaval nan Peyi Dayiti) with award-winning writer Edwidge Danticat and Reverend  Nathanael Saint-Pierre. Moderated by Lochard Noel\, PhD. Includes special segments with artist Stephen Arboite and Haitian radio personality Severe Livincoeurs from WSRF. \nCarnival\, called Madigra (Mardi-Gras) in Haiti\, is a cultural event that is not to be missed. The population of Haiti\, from the very poor to the very wealthy\, dresses up in their brightest clothes and parades to the rhythms of Konpa music. Madigra has a long history. This celebration originated in Europe\, and was brought to the New World\, where it blended with Native-American traditions during colonization. Madigra in Haiti is a national celebration. Every town has its own version of Madigra\, from decorated floats rolling past with beautiful queens waving to the crowds\, to live bands\, marching musical groups\, to colorful traditional costumes… Everyone sings\, dances\, and unwinds. But beyond the fun\, there is a serious component to Madigra. It is also a time for the people to relay their demands and criticism with short plays and lyrics directed at political figures. \nIn this panel discussion\, we will talk about the fun parts of Madigra\, but also look at some of the more serious aspects of the celebration. Chak vil gen estil madigra pa li\, cha dekore k ap pase avèk bèl rèn k ap voye men bay foul la\, djaz k ap jwe\, bann apye\, kostim tradisyonèl tout koulè… Tout moun ap chante\, danse\, defoule konsyans yo.  Anplis de plezi an\, gen yon eleman serye nan Madigra tou. Se epòk tou kote pèp la fè pase revandikasyon ak kritik li ak ti pyès teyat ak chante pwent pou atake ofisyèl politik yo. \nNan panèl diskisyon sa a\, nou pral pale de pati detant la nan Madigra\, men n ap gade tou kèk nan aspè pi serye selebrasyon an.

SUMMARY:Understanding Haiti’s New Proposed Laws
DESCRIPTION:Moderated by Leonie Hermantin\, member of the Center for Haitian Studies’ Board of Directors. \nPresented in Haitian Creole with English subtitles.\nEnglish transcription available for non-Creole speakers \nDuring the colonial era\, Haiti’s Black Code governed the slavery system. Later\, the Civil Code was added to the Black Code with the aim of softening the slavery system. Today\, the Haitian government is proposing a new Penal Code for Haiti – one that would emulate other countries that have adopted a series of laws and principles that govern their people’s behavior regardless of their race\, color\, creed\, or language. Would a new Haitian Penal Code be at odds with our current legal system\, and with our principles and history? In this panel\, political sociologist Jean Eddy Saint Paul and writer Alin L. Hall (La Péninsule républicaine) discuss Haiti’s proposed Penal Code. \nSponsored by \n \n \nand in partnership with

SUMMARY:The Queens\, Empresses\, and First Ladies of Haiti
DESCRIPTION:Moderated by Marleine Bastien\, executive director of FANM\, and MJ Fievre\, author of Badass Black Girl. \nPresented in Haitian Creole with English subtitles. \nEnglish transcription available for non-Creole speakers \nThe history of Haiti includes many notable queens and empresses\, such as Marie Claire Heureuse Félicité Bonheur\, the wife of Haitian general Jean Jacques Dessalines; Marie Louise Coidavid\, the wife of King Henry Christophe; and Adelina Soulouque\, the wife of President Soulouque. Haiti’s first ladies\, such as Suzanne Simone Baptiste\, the wife of Toussaint Louverture\, leader of the Haitian revolution; Lucienne Heurtelou\, the wife of President Dumarsais Estimé; Yolette Leconte\, the wife of President Paul Eugene Magloire; and Michele Bennet\, the wife of Jean-Claude “Baby Doc” Duvalier; and so many more also share a vibrant historical heritage. For the most part\, however\, the queens\, empresses\, and first ladies of Haiti have remained in the shadows. In this panel\, Bayyinah Bello\, author of SHEROES of the Haitian Revolution\, will explore the accomplishments and the considerable political power of these women.  \nSponsored by \n \n \nand in partnership with

SUMMARY:So Queer and So Caribbean
DESCRIPTION:Moderated by Julio Capó Jr.\, FIU associate professor of history and deputy director of The Wolfsonian Public Humanities Lab. \nPresented in English. \nIn the Caribbean\, LGBTQ individuals live in fear of being ostracized at a minimum and physically assaulted – or even murdered – at worst. This panel celebrates the contributions of LGBTQ writers with roots in Haiti\, Cuba\, Trinidad\, and Saint Thomas who are unapologetic for their queerness and whose writing challenges Caribbean homophobia. \nThe author of the PEN/Faulkner nominated The Tower of the Antilles as well as other titles\, Achy Obejas frequently writes on sexuality and nationality\, and has received a USA Ford Fellowship and an NEA\, among other awards\, for her creative work. Shani Mootoo’s Polar Vortex is a seductive and tension-filled novel about Priya and Alex\, a lesbian couple  who attempt to escape the secrets of their pasts. Stonewall and Lambda Award-winning author Kacen Callender’s King of the Rising is the searing conclusion to an unflinching and powerful Caribbean-inspired fantasy series about colonialism\, resilience and defiance. \nSponsored by \n \nand in partnership with

SUMMARY:Maria\, Maria: Hurricane Stories
DESCRIPTION:Moderated by Geoffrey Philp\, author of Hurricane Center\, and MJ Fievre\, ReadCaribbean coordinator. \nPresented in English. \nPlease note that there is a short interlude between Part I and Part II.\nPlease stay connected. Part II will start playing shortly after Part I.\n\nThrough poetry\, fiction\, and reportage\, Caribbean writers share with the world the fury of hurricanes\, showing how fierce winds and torrential rains frequently help determine national – and individual – courses of action. In this panel\, authors from Dominica\, Puerto Rico\, and Jamaica explore the experiences and emotions following the wake of Hurricane Maria. Celia A Sorhaindo brings us Guabancex\, a poetry collection that blurs the lines between realism and mythology; Orlando-based journalist María T. Padilla and retired first responder Nancy Rosado discuss Tossed to the Wind\, the gripping account of the wreckage\, despair\, and displacement Maria left behind; and from Kereen Getten comes When Life Gives You Mangoes\, the story about a young girl who can’t remember anything from her previous summer after a hurricane. \nSponsored by \n \n \nand in partnership with

SUMMARY:Witches\, Wolves\, and Women
DESCRIPTION:Grades 9 – 12 \nIn Wayward Witch by Zoraida Córdova\, Rose Mortiz has brand new powers that she doesn’t understand\, and her family is still trying to figure out how to function in the wake of her amnesiac father’s return home. Then\, on the night of her Death Day party\, Rose discovers her father’s memory loss has been a lie. As she rushes to his side\, the two are ambushed and pulled through a portal to the land of Adas\, a fairy realm hidden in the Caribbean Sea. If Rose wants to return home so that she can repair her broken family\, she must figure out how to heal Adas first. \nIn Romina Garber’s Lobizona\, Manuela Azul has been crammed into an existence that feels too small for her. As an undocumented immigrant who’s on the run from her father’s Argentine crime family\, Manu is confined to a small apartment and a small life in Miami – until her protective bubble is shattered. Without a home\, without answers\, and finally without shackles\, Manu investigates the only clue she has about her past\, which leads her to a secret world buried within our own. A world straight out of Argentine folklore\, where the seventh consecutive daughter is born a “bruja\,” or witch\, and the seventh consecutive son is a “lobizón\,” a werewolf. \nSponsored by

SUMMARY:Virtual Pachanga: The YA Edition
DESCRIPTION:Grades 9 – 12 \nIn Clap When You Land by Elizabeth Acevedo\, 16-year-old Camino Rios lives for the summer – especially the first week of June – when her father visits her in the Dominican Republic. But this time\, on the day when his plane is supposed to land\, Camino arrives at the airport to see crowds of crying people. Roughly 1\,500 miles away in New York City\, Yahaira Rios is called to the principal’s office\, where she meets her “Ms. Universe-perfect” mother with her hair in rollers waiting to tell her that her father\, her hero\, has died in a plane crash\, and her entire world changes. Separated by distance – and Papi’s secrets – the two girls are forced to face a new reality\, one in which their worlds collide\, and their lives are forever altered. \nIsmée Williams’ This Train is Being Held is about Alex\, a baseball player. A great one. His papi is pushing him to go pro\, but Alex maybe wants to be a poet. Not that Papi would understand or allow that. Isa is a dancer. She’d love to go pro\, if only her Havana-born mom weren’t dead set against it\, just like she’s dead set against her daughter falling for a Latino. And Isa’s privileged private-school life – with her dad losing his job and her older brother struggling with mental illness – is falling apart. Not that she’d ever tell that to Alex. Fate\, and the New York City subway\, bring Alex and Isa together. Is it enough to keep them together when they need each other most? \nFREE bonus download: Official Spotify playlist for This Train is Being Held \nSponsored by \n \n
