SUMMARY:In Conversation: Kaveh Akbar & Kevin Young
DESCRIPTION:Kaveh Akbar’s second collection\, Pilgrim Bell: Poems\, takes its readers on a spiritual journey of disavowal\, fiercely attendant to the presence of divinity where artifacts of self and belonging have been shed. Akbar responds with prayer as an act of devotion to dissonance – the infinite void of a loved one’s absence\, the indulgence of austerity\, making a life as a Muslim in an Islamophobic nation – teasing the sacred out of silence and stillness. Whether it’s the fireflies of a Louisiana summer caught in a mason jar (doomed by their collection)\, or his grandmother\, Mama Annie\, who latches the screen door when someone steps out for just a moment\, all that makes up our flickering precarious joy\, all that we want to protect\, is lifted into the light in this moving book. Stones: Poems becomes an ode to Kevin Young’s home places and his dear departed\, and to what of them – of us – poetry can save. \nSponsored by                                                                                               \n \n  \n  \nIn partnership with

SUMMARY:Reason & Unreason: Three Poets on Destruction\, Memory & Hope
DESCRIPTION:In Asylum: A Personal\, Historical\, Natural Inquiry in 103 Lyric Sections\, Jill Bialosky considers the oppositions that govern us: our reason and unreason\, our need to preserve and destruct\, building a narrative sequence that examines her nascent calling as a writer; her sister’s suicide and its still unfolding aftermath; the horror unleashed by World War II; the life cycle of the monarch butterfly; and the woods where she seeks asylum – to form a moving story\, powerfully braiding despair\, survival\, and hope. Walking through the landscape of loss\, the poems in Anne Marie Macari’s Heaven Beneath: Poems explore the illness of a parent and the parallel ongoing degradation and destruction of the planet and its creatures. Beneath “paved-over space\,” in the deep currents of a river\, or the shadows of great trees\, there’s another world\, there’s a heaven\, unknowable\, in the muck\, alive and with us\, not distant or abstract. Maggie Smith\, the author of Keep Moving\, returns to poetry with Goldenrod: Poems\, a new collection that looks at parenthood\, solitude\, love\, and memory\, pulling objects from everyday life to celebrate the contours of daily life\, explore and delight in the space between thought and experience\, and remind us that we decide what is beautiful. Moderated by Caridad Moro-Gronlier of Supporting Women Writers in Miami (SWWIM). \nSponsored by                                                                                               \n \n  \n  \nIn partnership with

SUMMARY:In Conversation: On Libertie: A Novel & Great Circle: A Novel
DESCRIPTION:Kaitlyn Greenidge‘s Libertie: A Novel follows the coming of age of Libertie Sampson in a free Black community in Reconstruction-era Brooklyn\, as she tries to parse what freedom means for a Black woman. The story\, rich with historical detail\, is inspired by the life of one of the first Black female doctors in the United States. From Maggie Shipstead comes Great Circle: A Novel\, an epic story of two captivating women 100 years apart – Marian\, a daredevil aviator who disappeared in Antarctica\, and Hadley\, the actress portraying her on film. And as the latter immerses herself further into her role\, both women’s lives thrillingly unfold across the pages. Moderated by Jordan Kisner\, creator and host of the Thresholds podcast.

SUMMARY:In Conversation: On A River Called Time: A Novel & The Ninth Metal
DESCRIPTION:Courttia Newland‘s A River Called Time: A Novel is set at the Ark\, a massive structure in the center of Dinium – an alternative London – that promised a utopian existence for those invited. Markriss Denny is one of the chosen – but once inside\, he uncovers the truth about the Ark\, himself\, and the people he once thought he knew. In Benjamin Percy’s The Ninth Metal\, a meteor shower brings to Earth a new metal – one that possesses world-changing properties as an energy source and a weapon – to Northfall\, Minnesota. Soon\, the town’s iron-ore dynastic family finds itself in a cutthroat war for the mineral rights and mining operations\, as foreign leaders\, competing corporations\, and the U.S. government all vie for control. Moderated by author Victor LaValle.

SUMMARY:In Conversation: On The Mad Women’s Ball: A Novel & Mrs. March: A Novel
DESCRIPTION:In Victoria Mas’ The Mad Women’s Ball: A Novel\, the dazzling displays of hypnotism on women who have been deemed mad and cast from society in 1885 Paris’ Salpêtrière Asylum hide a wicked truth – these women are not sick\, just inconvenient. Among them is 19-year-old protagonist Eugenie\, who is determined to escape from the asylum and the bonds of her gender. In Virginia Feito’s Mrs. March: A Novel – part Hitchcockian psychological thriller\, part social satire – the title character is the proper\, dutiful wife of a successful novelist and proud of his success. But after a neighborhood shopkeeper suggests that the detestable protagonist in her husband’s latest work is based on Mrs. March herself\, her world begins to spin madly out of control. Moderated by Sandra M. Gilbert and Susan Gubar\, authors of Still Mad: American Women Writers and the Feminist Imagination.

SUMMARY:A South Beach Documentary: “Abraham's Bakery”
DESCRIPTION:Aaron Davidson’s documentary films on Jewish themes have all been created in South Florida\, but transcend their local flavor and are at once familiar and nostalgic. A hallmark of his work is a periodic update of his films\, often with poignant\, ironic\, or unexpected results\, as films made innocently more than a decade ago in an earlier context take on new and added meaning with contemporary footage. “Abraham’s Bakery” is one of three films being screened for Miami Book Fair that amazingly span 13 years – a significant milestone\, as the films are now Bar Mitzvah age.   \nAbraham’s Bakery \nAbraham’s Kosher Bakery was a Miami Beach landmark for more than 30 years and one of the last old-fashioned bakeries of its kind. The film lovingly follows the process of making kosher favorites\, and along the way shares the stories of some of the bakers and patrons. Various updates since the original film was made explore the continued journey of the bakery and its location.

Davidson was there to capture the essence of this classic restaurant on its last day as patrons came to reminisce at this stalwart landmark. The filmmaker has returned to this location over the years for several surprising updates of what happened after its closing.

In this documentary\, we visit one of the oldest surviving and the last stand-alone kosher butcher shop on Miami Beach to find out why customers keep coming back – and why a butcher is more than just a store. The film was initially made when the butcher moved to a new location to attract new customers and keep old ones.
