He’s joined by Dawn Davis\, the new editor-in-chief of Bon Appétit and a former vice president and publisher at Simon & Schuster. \n  \nSponsored by:

SUMMARY:In Conversation: On Confronting Prejudice\, Racism\, and Bigotry
DESCRIPTION:When Özlem Cekic became the first Muslim MP in the Danish Parliament\, her email inbox was hit with a deluge of hate mail and threats\, and her gut reaction was to delete every abusive message. But eventually\, she decided to take a risk. She started replying and inviting the senders to meet and engage in dialogue over coffee. And with time\, understanding\, and patience\, she began to make a difference\, both in the lives of those who hated her before even meeting her\, and in her own life. She’s chronicled that experience – and what she’s learned from it – in Overcoming Hate Through Dialogue: Confronting Prejudice\, Racism\, and Bigotry with Understanding – And Coffee. Eric Martin\, author of Your Leadership Moment: Democratizing Leadership in the Age of Authoritarianism\, joins her to talk about it; coffee is optional.

Condon is speaking with David Lawrence Jr.\, who retired in 1999 as publisher of the Miami Herald to work in the area of early childhood development and readiness. Lawrence later led successful campaigns for the establishment of The Children’s Trust and today is chair of The Children’s Movement of Florida. His memoir\, A Dedicated Life: Journalism\, Justice and a Chance for Every Child\, was published in 2018. \nSponsored by

SUMMARY:An Evening With Louise Erdrich & Heid E. Erdrich
DESCRIPTION:  LIVE! Event starts Friday\, November 20 @ 6 p.m. \nTwo sisters present their latest works in a conversation informed by the dynamic of the familiar. \nLouise Erdrich’s novel The Night Watchman explores themes of love and death with lightness and gravity. It’s a fictional world populated by memorable characters forced to grapple with the worst and best impulses of human nature\, that touches upon the very real tragedy of missing Native American women. \nIn her collection of poems Little Big Bully\, Heid E. Erdrich offers personal myth\, American and Native American contexts\, and allegories driven by women’s resistance to narcissists\, stalkers\, and harassers. The collective experience of Indigenous people\, from ecosystem collapse due to the near-extinction of bison to the present epidemic of missing and murdered Indigenous women\, underlie her prose. \nSponsored by:

SUMMARY:Can Comics Help Save Our Democracy?
DESCRIPTION:The ideal of American democracy fits neatly in the framework of our Constitution\, like a perfectly centered portrait entitled We The People. But when the frame is hung askew\, it gets tough to read – thankfully\, we have pictures to follow along with! In Unrig: How to Fix Our Broken Democracy\, Dan Newman and George O’Connor dive into dark money in politics and detail the steps to take toward fixing a broken system. R. Sikoryak makes all aspects of the Constitution easy enough for even Homer Simpson to understand in Constitution Illustrated. And Cynthia Levinson‘s Fault Lines in the Constitution sheds light on how today’s political struggles have their origins in the decisions of our Founding Fathers. \nModerated by Jacob Brogan\, assistant opinions editor at the Washington Post.

SUMMARY:Three Documentaries on Jewish South Beach
DESCRIPTION:Aaron Davidson’s documentary films on Jewish themes have all been created in South Florida\, but transcend their local flavor and are at once familiar and nostalgic. With the passage of time his earliest films have become both historical records and time capsules\, documenting places that have since closed or become unrecognizable and now live on in film only. A hallmark of Davidson’s work is his periodic updates of his films\, often with poignant\, ironic\, or unexpected results. Films made innocently more than a decade ago in an earlier context take on new and added meaning with contemporary footage. Driven by that experience\, the three films being screened for the Miami Book Fair now amazingly span 12 years\, and they have all been updated in anticipation of their premiere screening at the Fair.

SUMMARY:In Conversation: On Let Love Rule
DESCRIPTION:Multiple Grammy Award-winning singer and songwriter Lenny Kravitz reflects on the first 25 years of his life in his new autobiography\, Let Love Rule\, the timeline of which culminates in the release of his first studio album\, which shares the book’s title. \nKravitz muses over duality – he grew up the son of Black Caribbean actress Roxie Roker\, a Christian\, and Sy Kravitz\, a successful TV producer who was white and Jewish – and follows his discovery of and immersion in music\, his life-changing relationship with ex-wife Lisa Bonet and the joy of being a father (their daughter is actress Zoë Kravitz)\, and his unwavering stance on making his music\, his way\, despite the many opportunities he had to sign with other labels before finding his first home with Virgin records. Along the way he shares personal revelations\, traumatic moments\, and drops a who’s who list of bold-faced music and movie industry names\, making this glimpse into the life and mind of a rock star a scenic ride. He’s speaking with Kiesha Garrison\, director of communications and culture programs at Microsoft.
