SUMMARY:Christina Pettersson: How to Commune With the Dead Miami City Cemetery
DESCRIPTION:Local artist Christina Pettersson invites viewers to learn more about the lost histories of Florida. Pushing aside the undeserving\, bloodthirsty white industrialists too long held up as heroes\, she explores instead its Bahamian pioneers\, frontier women\, and unique landscape and animals\, as well as its history of racial injustices. Through original writing\, site-specific video documentation\, and archival material\, you are invited to walk with her through the gates of time and embark on a pilgrimage toward finding more deserving memorials – and seeing your own world on a deeper level. \nBorn in Stockholm\, Sweden\, Christina Pettersson has lived in Miami most of her life. Her last two solo exhibitions\, in Everglades National Park and at the historic Deering Estate on Biscayne Bay\, reflect her lifelong passions in her hometown. \nRecent shows include the Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM); Museum of Contemporary Art\, Miami; Girls Club\, Fort Lauderdale; the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood\, Florida; and Launch F18 in New York. Pettersson has also exhibited at museums across the South\, including the Birmingham Museum of Art and Wiregrass Museum of Art in Alabama\, the Columbus Museum of Art in Georgia\, the Baltimore Museum of Art\, and the Naples Museum of Art in Florida.

SUMMARY:Let My People Vote: My Battle to Restore the Civil Rights of Returning Citizens
DESCRIPTION:“You may think the right to vote is a small matter\, and if you do\, I would bet you have never had it taken away from you.” \nThus begins the story of Desmond Meade and his inspiring journey to restore voting rights to roughly 1.4 million returning citizens in Florida – resulting in a stunning victory in 2018 that enfranchised more people at once in any single initiative since women’s suffrage. \n“Let My People Vote” is the deeply moving\, personal story of Meade’s life\, his political activism\, and the movement he spearheaded to restore voting rights to returning citizens who had served their terms. Meade survived a tough childhood only to find himself with a felony conviction. Finding the strength to pull his life together\, he graduated summa cum laude from college\, graduated from law school\, and married. But because of his conviction\, he was not even allowed to sit for the bar exam in Florida. And when his wife ran for state office\, he was filled with pride – but not permitted to vote for her. \nMeade takes us on a journey from his time in homeless shelters\, to the exhilarating\, joyful night in November of 2018\, when Amendment 4 passed with 65% of the vote. Meade’s story\, and his commitment to a fully enfranchised nation\, will prove to readers that one person really can make a difference. \nDesmond Meade is the president of the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition\, chair of Floridians for a Fair Democracy\, and a graduate of Florida International University College of Law. As a formerly homeless returning citizen\, he fought to restore voting rights to more than 1.4 million Floridians with past felony convictions. He was recognized by Time as one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World in 2019. Today\, Meade continues fighting against new restrictions placed on Florida voters that have been likened to Jim Crow laws. Meade and his wife and five children live in Florida. Connect with him @desmondmeade.

SUMMARY:Exchange for Change: The Writing on the Wall
DESCRIPTION:In partnership with the acclaimed visual artist Hank Willis Thomas\, the nonprofit architecture firm MASS Design Group\, and the production team Openbox\, Incarceration Nations Network presents The Writing on the Wall\, a pop-up art installation made from writing by people in prisons around the world. In an effort to raise awareness about mass incarceration and center the words of those directly impacted at the heart of the fight for prison reimagining\, the installation is displayed in public spaces as a form of verbal and visual intrusion. Each debut The Writing on the Wall is an event and ongoing campaign\, coordinated in collaboration with local justice reform organizations and led by formerly incarcerated community leaders. It has thus far been exhibited in New York City on the High Line park – the most trafficked public park in the world – as well as in Detroit\, New Orleans\, Philadelphia\, and Miami. IncarcerationNationsNetwork.com \nExchange for Change offers writing courses in prisons and runs letter exchanges between incarcerated students and writers studying on the outside. By preparing incarcerated people for their re-entry into the outside community and preparing that community for their return\, Exchange for Change provides vision and understanding on both sides of the fence.

SUMMARY:Richie Hell: “The Gumbo Limbo Experiment”
DESCRIPTION:When Richie Hell moved from Buenos Aires to Miami in 2015\, he saw how the gumbo limbo tree’s bark peeled off\, like a snake shedding its skin. He saw it as a positive sign: nature supporting this new beginning. His new full-length “The Gumbo Limbo Experiment” is an album that takes you to another place. Hell – an avid record collector\, DJ\, and musician since his teens – mixes and merges musical elements from across the space-time continuum: Afro and Balkan beats\, traveling blues\, future soul\, ’90s house\, Spaghetti Western sounds\, samples and field recordings\, mermaid calls\, and mantric chants. With homages to jungles\, cannabis\, inner strength\, and other life forces\, it makes sense that his music comes across as spiritual. \nHell also joins forces with a number of guest artists\, a reflection of his live shows\, which feature a full band and guest vocalists. Peruvian psychedelic cumbia legends Los Mirlos join him for “Amazonia\,” Argentine singer Martes provides her sultry\, soulful vocals on “Going Nomad” and “Revelations\,” and on the weed anthem “From The Earth” Atlanta rapper Black Bobby reminds us that cannabis is a gift from nature. The vibrant\, distinctive album art is by renowned visual artist Francisca Oyhanarte\, Hell’s wife. His sounds became songs\, her visions became images. From Miami\, for the universe\, “The Gumbo Limbo Experiment” offers a variety of beats to chill\, dance\, and groove to\, for fans of Quantic\, Khruangbin\, Polo & Pan\, El Búho\, Thievery Corporation\, and beyond. Hell makes world music that is otherworldly. \nRichie Hell transcends the terrestrial with his psychedelic take on intercontinental rhythms and uplifting mantric live shows. Born in Buenos Aires\, Argentina\, where he’s widely known as both a DJ and producer\, he arrived in Miami in 2015 and quickly became a favorite behind the decks at clubs around the Magic City. An avid record collector\, Hell absorbs influences from every reach of the musical spectrum\, adding his universal steady beat to produce a groovy\, shamanic experience. His original psych-infused electronic tunes are as satisfying on the dance floor as they are at a festival\, where his legendary live performances include hieroglyphic visuals by Francisca Oyhanarte\, 12-foot-tall inflatable cobras\, and guest vocalists. These are just a few of the tricks in his magic bag\, which have catapulted him to playing concerts and festivals all over the world. With three EPs released and a full-length LP out this summer\, Hell is ready to soundtrack today’s global dance party.

SUMMARY:Three Documentaries on Jewish South Beach
DESCRIPTION:Aaron Davidson’s documentary films on Jewish themes have all been created in South Florida\, but transcend their local flavor and are at once familiar and nostalgic. With the passage of time his earliest films have become both historical records and time capsules\, documenting places that have since closed or become unrecognizable and now live on in film only. A hallmark of Davidson’s work is his periodic updates of his films\, often with poignant\, ironic\, or unexpected results. Films made innocently more than a decade ago in an earlier context take on new and added meaning with contemporary footage. Driven by that experience\, the three films being screened for the Miami Book Fair now amazingly span 12 years\, and they have all been updated in anticipation of their premiere screening at the Fair.

SUMMARY:Jesse Millner: A Reading From Memory’s Blue Sedan
DESCRIPTION:At a time in which many poems feel like sophisticated parlor games\, Memory’s Blue Sedan by Jesse Millner brings us back to the ground\, the soil of true poetry\, in which living things grow and flourish in all their various complexities. His haunted and haunting poems are awesome in their commingling of autobiography\, history\, and references to the customs and beliefs in which his mind and heart came to consciousness. Many of the poems in this book feel like living beings\, organic in their form and painfully honest in their revelations. Memory’s Blue Sedan speaks to both the heart and to the mind – indeed it speaks to the soul. It is a courageous book. \nSponsored by:

SUMMARY:A U.S. Poet Laureate in Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Billy Collins’ new collection\, Whale Day and Other Poems\, brings together more than fifty poems and showcases his deft mixing of the playful and the serious that has made him one of our country’s most celebrated and widely read poets. Here are poems that leap with whimsy and imagination\, yet stay grounded in the familiar\, common things of everyday experience. Collins takes us for a walk with an impossibly ancient dog\, discovers the original way to eat a banana\, meets an Irish spider\, and even invites us to his own funeral. Sensitive to the wonders of being alive as well as the thrill of mortality\, Whale Day builds on and amplifies Collins’ reputation as one of America’s most interesting and durable poets. \nModerated by Campbell McGrath\, Nouns & Verbs: New and Selected Poems. \nSponsored by:

SUMMARY:Alicia Zuckerman: The Sally J. Freedman Reality Tour with Judy Blume
DESCRIPTION:Alicia Zuckerman first started doing research for The Sally J. Freedman Reality Tour when she was about 9 years old\, making this her longest-running project. Judy Blume‘s 1977 young adult book\, Starring Sally J. Freedman as Herself\, was Zuckerman’s introduction to Miami Beach\, and one of her very favorite Blume books. When she found herself living in Sally’s neighborhood a few decades later\, she was surprised by the ways in which the area felt familiar. And she wondered – would Judy Blume come take a walk with her through some of Sally’s old haunts? But what Zuckerman didn’t realize was that Sally’s Miami Beach was Judy’s Miami Beach. \n“It is my most autobiographical book\,” Blume told Zuckerman during that walk. “Those two years were the most important two years of my childhood.” \nCome along as the beloved author walks us through her old neighborhood and talks about how her time in Miami Beach shaped not only Sally J. Freedman\, but the beloved and fearless writer Blume would become.

SUMMARY:In Conversation: Contemplating a Paradise Lost
DESCRIPTION:Through a series of short memoirs\, Laura Valeri’s After Life as a Human visits Dog Island\, a remote\, amenity-deprived\, hurricane-prone islet where pelicans rule\, residents are resourceful\, and human ambition is suspect. With uncanny observation and lyrical reflection\, these essays explore the persistence\, fragility\, and connectedness of life on the island and off. Valeri masterfully links local history\, environmental research\, and spiritual meditations to reflect on the island’s wild beauty\, while coming to terms with the heartbreaking destruction of its fragile ecology. Sandra Beasley\, author of four poetry collections\, including the forthcoming Made to Explode\, joins her in her musings. \nSponsored by

SUMMARY:Witches\, Wolves\, and Women
DESCRIPTION:Grades 9 – 12 \nIn Wayward Witch by Zoraida Córdova\, Rose Mortiz has brand new powers that she doesn’t understand\, and her family is still trying to figure out how to function in the wake of her amnesiac father’s return home. Then\, on the night of her Death Day party\, Rose discovers her father’s memory loss has been a lie. As she rushes to his side\, the two are ambushed and pulled through a portal to the land of Adas\, a fairy realm hidden in the Caribbean Sea. If Rose wants to return home so that she can repair her broken family\, she must figure out how to heal Adas first. \nIn Romina Garber’s Lobizona\, Manuela Azul has been crammed into an existence that feels too small for her. As an undocumented immigrant who’s on the run from her father’s Argentine crime family\, Manu is confined to a small apartment and a small life in Miami – until her protective bubble is shattered. Without a home\, without answers\, and finally without shackles\, Manu investigates the only clue she has about her past\, which leads her to a secret world buried within our own. A world straight out of Argentine folklore\, where the seventh consecutive daughter is born a “bruja\,” or witch\, and the seventh consecutive son is a “lobizón\,” a werewolf. \nSponsored by

SUMMARY:A Sinking Ship is Still a Ship
DESCRIPTION:In Ariel Francisco’s Miami\, invasive lionfish are sympathetic creatures\, the beach succumbs to sea-level rise\, and “305 till I die” is a cry for help. The speakers in these hilarious and melancholy poems depict a rich and varied emotional landscape that mirrors that of the state they long to leave\, dead or alive. They imagine themselves standing on ocean garbage patches\, contemplate the crabgrass on traffic medians\, and envision the new beauty of a submerged Miami Beach: “Famed art deco replaced by fire coral / and colorful parrot fish\, neon lights / restored by pulsating swarms of moon / jellyfish\, lit up like a Saturday night.” In one moment the strange becomes familiar\, only to become strange again in the next stanza. Taking inspiration from Campbell McGrath and Richard Blanco\, among others\, Francisco’s second book of poems\, A Sinking Ship is Still a Ship\, deals with climate change and the absurdities and difficulties of being a millennial Latinx in the Sunshine State. \nModerated by Ryan Rivas\, publisher of Burrow Press; with translator José Nicolás Cabrera-Schneider. \nSponsored by:
